Interconnection queues lengthen for large flexible loads

Utilities are reordering study processes as data-centre and mining requests compete for the same substations.

Average wait times for large-load interconnection studies have lengthened again this year as mining operators compete with conventional data-centre developers for capacity at the same substations.

Several utilities have introduced deposit requirements and readiness milestones designed to filter speculative requests, after finding that a large share of queued projects never reached construction.

For miners the change is double-edged. Higher deposits raise the cost of optioning sites, but a shorter, more credible queue improves the odds that a funded project energises on schedule.

Flexibility is emerging as the differentiator. Operators willing to sign firm curtailment obligations are being studied ahead of inflexible loads in at least two jurisdictions reviewed by DC10AUDIO.

Regulators in those states are reviewing whether the preference should be codified in tariff language rather than left to utility discretion.
